Preparing For University

There are many mistakes I made during my first year, because I didn’t have the university resources I needed nor did I know where and who to reach out to.

If I had to give you just one piece of advice, I would say dive deep and do your research! Go through your university’s websites, they are usually linked to one and other. Check for different requirements, important deadlines for enrolment, payments, etc.

You might even as well just find out details about clubs, student organizations, and other communities that could benefit you for life. I have always regretted not putting myself out there during my first year, but you don’t have to make the same mistake as I did!

5 University Resources You Need

For Planning

I have always emphasized the importance of being organized as one of the most useful tips I have for university students. Whether you have a preference for digital planning or physical planning, I have just the right university resource for you!

If you are aiming to focus on planning for a specific course, consider creating a study plan. It allows you to plan ahead and prepare you for any upcoming deadlines.

Digital Planning

If you prioritize efficiency, then digital planning is for you! My favourite tools for this includes:

• Google Calendar
• Notion
• Goodnotes (using templates)

Physical Planning

Digital planning might be convenient but nothing compares to the touch and smell of papers! Here are some of the places I like to find physical planners from:

• Indigo / Chapters (any book store)
• Amazon
• Etsy

For Managing Money

University is a great way to start learning about your money, it is the time you start building a healthy financial habit that leads to financial freedom in the future.

The very small step to take first is by budgeting. If you are new to budgeting, I recommend using the 50-30-20 budgeting rule to help you do so.

This budgeting rule is perfect for beginners, allowing you to start saving while ensuring you to have enough to spend on necessities and your wants.

For Time-Management

If you need only one soft skill to survive in university, that would be time management. Other than academic duties like assignments, quizzes, and assigned readings, many university students also have part-time jobs or other duties to fulfill throughout their day, which is where the importance of time management manifests itself.

Use the 8-8-8 time-management method to help you plan out your day.

For Your Mind, Body & Soul

School is important, but taking care of yourself is just as important. Every week on Sunday, I like to dedicate the whole day to caring for myself, doing things I enjoy doing to give peace to mind. Like many others, I call it the Self Care Sunday.

With enough rest, your brain and body functions better, helping you to face any upcoming challenges that might arise through your academic journey.

For Learning

Education is the most powerful weapon. Other than attending lectures and tutorials, it’s great to spend time learning something extra.

The internet is a great way to do so, there are many platforms that provide free education, some of my favourite ones are:

• YouTube
• Coursera
• LinkedIn Learning (Paid)

University has never been so fun and exciting without these 5 useful resources! I hope you had fun reading and making use of them from this blog post.
